| The Author Bruni E. Ziegler Born on the run on September 17th, 1939 during one of the darkest moments of World War II's bloody history, my family was escaping our hometown, fleeing for safer grounds. Trying to survive through years of wars explosive hell, growing up scared by sirens blaring through the dark of night, watching my mother cry silently, listening to every sound as she was waiting for my father to return home from the war, already at a young age I witnessed first hand what heart ache and suffering was all about. Going hungry for days, barely existing in a haunted time of fear, even today, terrible memories of yester years frightening demons are still riding me emotionally. One of five remaining children, now fatherless, due to the aftermath of the horrors of war, I decided to leave the still impoverished war-torn Germany behind at the tender age of fifteen years old.
With Mother's blessings, crossing the ocean by ship, I arrived in the USA in May of 1955. Searching for a brighter tomorrow I was welcomed by my Aunt Elisabeth and Uncle George Berg. Impressed by my new world, I just stood and stared, I was so overwhelmed by the miracle of New York City, all its glitz and glamour, its multi-colored cars and flashing neon lights. Over the next few decades, I would continue my search for the American Dream. I found it, but sadly just like a colorful rainbow it vanished all too soon.
